Alec Gray was a dependable full back who played with Melbourne at the beginning of the first world war as well as after it. His career with the Fuchsias comprised 52 VFL games in 1914-15 and from 1919 to 1921, during which he failed to register a single goal, something which was par for the course for permanent defenders at the time. In 1922 he crossed to Preston, which at the time was competing in the VJFA.
