Recruited by Essendon from Frankston, Ben Baxter developed into an extremely handy defender. In his debut season of 1902 he was unfortunate to miss the Same Old’s losing grand final against Collingwood, although it is doubtful if he alone could have reversed the result. In 1903 he produced the best form of his career, playing every match for the year, as well as representing Victoria.
