Tough, hard running defender Brian Douge joined Hawthorn from Balwyn and was a solid player for the club in 91 VFL games between 1969 and 1976 although he did not really establish himself as a regular senior player until 1973. His last game in the blue and gold was the winning grand final of 1976 against North Melbourne when he was rated high among the Hawks' best. Appointed captain-coach of Subiaco in 1977 he steered the Lions to sixth position that year and seventh the next. After stepping down as coach in 1979 Douge continued as a player and captain with Subi for another three seasons playing a total of 81 WAFL games.
