Recruited by South Melbourne from Paddington in 1918 Chris Laird experienced the thrill at season’s end of soccering the winning goal in the club’s 9.8 to 7.15 grand final win over Collingwood. It was one of his three goals for a match in which he was among the southerners’ best players.
After that things did not exactly go downhill as Laird continued to produce some fine football but there was to be no further premiership success. When he retired in 1922 he had played 59 VFL games and kicked 99 goals for South. His twin brother, Frank Laird, also played for South Melbourne.
