London-born Fred Fairweather commenced his senior football playing career with South Melbourne City before progressing to Port Melbourne in the VFA. A ruckman, in 1937-8, 1941 and 1945 he played 33 games and scored 39 goals for the Borough and was a member of their winning 1941 grand final team against Coburg. With the exception of a single game for Port in 1945 he spent the period between 1944 and 1946 playing 54 games and kicking 14 goals for VFL side North Melbourne. Already aged 31 when he made his league debut, he nevertheless acquitted himself well, and was sufficiently highly thought of to be installed as captain in his final season. After leaving North he captain-coached Carnegie for a time.
