Having played in Leopold’s 1900 Metropolitan Football Association premiership triumph Horrie Drane joined Melbourne, and made his debut for the club in round eight 1902. At first he struggled to cement a place in the team, but in 1904-5 he achieved regular selection. Pacy and strong, he lined up for the most part on the wing. In 1906 he fell out of favour to some extent and played just eight matches for the year, giving him a final tally of 38 appearances for the club. He scored 11 goals.
The 1907 season found him at South Melbourne where he played 18 VFL games and booted one goal. His last appearance for the club came in the 1909 grand final defeat of Carlton when he replaced the suspended Jim Caldwell, having played just once previously during the season.
