Jack Harrington was a dependable back pocket and relief ruckman or ruck-rover who was prevented by a serious eye injury from building on a promising start to his VFL career. Originally from Colac, he started with Essendon in 1953 and won that season’s best first year player award, followed by best clubman awards in 1954-5. The eye injury occurred in 1957 and, after playing 64 games and scoring 12 goals, his time at the game’s elite level was over. He spent the 1958 and 1959 seasons as captain-coach of Sunday League team Preston-Brunswick.
