Collingwood recruited Jeff Clifton from Floreat Park in Western Australia before he had played at league level in that state. He went on to play 102 senior games for the Magpies from 1969 to 1974, mainly at full back where he was dogged, authoritative and hard working. A defender through and through, he failed to kick a goal either during his time at Collingwood or in his nine-game stint with Fitzroy in 1975-6. During his time with the Magpies he lined up at full back in the 1970 Grand Final loss to Carlton (reviewed here). His league career came to a premature end when he sustained a broken leg.
