From Colac-Coragulac, thinly-haired Lee Murnane hit the ground running when he commenced with Fitzroy in 1981, with many observers rating him the recruit of the year. However, he did not really fulfil his potential after that, although he could always be relied on to apply himself with considerable vigour. When he left the VFL scene behind at the end of the 1984 season - surprisingly early, in the view of some given that he was only 25 - he had played 51 games for the Lions and scored 49 goals.
