A classy forward who exhibited great coolness under pressure, Les Boyd never quite achieved as much in the game as his talent warranted. His stint at St Kilda was interrupted in 1916 and 1917 as the club went into recess in those years because of world war one. As it was, he played 42 VFL games and scored 43 goals for the Saints in 1915 and 1918-19. His tally of 17 goals in 1918 was good enough to top the club’s list for the season.

The 1920 season found Boyd at Melbourne where, statistically at any rate, he experienced a less productive time, with his 17 games in two and a bit years yielding just six goals. His next port of call was Brighton in the VFA, where he transferred during the 1922 season, and where he remained until 1927, playing 59 games and posting 96 goals. A one year stint as captain-coach of Port Fairy followed before he rounded off his career back in the VFA, this time with Sandringham for whom he would play 47 games and kick 101 goals over three seasons. He was the club’s top goal kicker in all three years.
