Murray Exelby joined Essendon from East Brunswick, having previously played for Silvan. He developed into a highly serviceable player for the Bombers in 113 VFL games between 1935 and 1944. He booted 102 goals. Lively, industrious and relentlessly determined, he could be used to equivalent effect either as a rover or on a half forward flank. In the 1942 Grand Final defeat of Richmond he contributed a couple of goals as a forward pocket and change rover. A year earlier he had also been a member of the Dons' losing Grand Final side against Melbourne.
After leaving Essendon Exelby joined VFA club Preston, where he spent two seasons before undertaking captain-coaching stints at Leongatha (1947-8), Mitcham (1949) and Mayne (1950). After returning home to Victoria he undertook non-playing coaching duties with his former club East Brunswick for a time, and finally with Croxton.
