In 1933 Pat McNamara joined Melbourne from Carlton, where he had failed to play a single senior game. He made his senior debut with the Demons the following year, and quickly developed into a handy wingman. Between 1934 and 1938 he played 54 VFL games without registering a goal.
The 1939 season saw him at South Melbourne where over the course of that season and the next he added a final 22 VFL games plus his first three goals to his respective tallies. In 1941 he captain-coached the seconds and won that year’s Gardiner Medal awarded to the competition best and fairest player at that level.
