In 1966 Melbourne’s Terry Leahy was widely acknowledged as one of the VFL’s finest debutants, an assessment endorsed by his claiming the club’s best and fairest trophy. Aged just 19 years and 354 days he was the youngest recipient of the award in club history.
Despite this, Leahy did not really kick on in 1967 when he only managed eight senior appearances. Even worse was to follow, as during an end of season trip to Queensland he committed an unnamed transgression which led to his being sacked. He had played 26 VFL games and scored eight goals for Melbourne. Offered a lifeline by South Melbourne, he produced some impressive football over the final three seasons of his league career, adding 39 appearances and nine goals to his respective tallies.
Terry Leahy’s brothers Brian and John also played for Melbourne.
