Wayne Jackson was an amateur footballer with Adelaide University between 1962 and 1964 before joining West Torrens. From 1965 to 1971 he played 71 league and numerous seconds games for the Eagles and was the club’s coach in 1974.
However, it was in the administrative sphere that he had his greatest impact, initially at West Torrens as club chairman and president, and then in a variety of roles with the SANFL. In 1995 he was appointed to the Australian Football League Commission and the following year he became the AFL’s Chief Executive Officer, a position he held until 2003.
