Well balanced and extremely skilful Scott Burns commenced at Norwood in the under 15s and progressed through the ranks before making his senior debut in 1992. Quickly proving he was a class act, he played in the Redlegs’ losing 1993 grand final against the Eagles, represented the state, and was named in the Advertiser Team of the Year in 1993-4. After playing 63 SANFL games and scoring 12 goals for Norwood Burns crossed to Collingwood in 1995 where he would enjoy a stellar career. After a solid debut season in which he only missed one match he lifted his level of performance still further in 1996 when he played state of origin football for South Australia and ran second in the Copeland Trophy, the Magpies best and fairest award. Despite niggling hamstring injuries he continued to be a key player for the club until 2008, with his final tally of 265 AFL appearances including the losing grand finals of 2002 and 2003, after both of which he was listed high among his team’s best players. Another career highlight was captaining the club in his final season.
