After struggling to make his mark at South Melbourne, where he managed just eight games and four goals from 1932 to 1934, Maurie Hearn rallied to put together a highly noteworthy playing career lasting more than a decade. Midway through the 1934 season he crossed to Fitzroy, where he had a big impact, playing 128 VFL games and scoring 87 goals between 1934 and 1937 and from 1939 to 1944. He served as club skipper in 1942. His last game for the Roys was their 1944 grand final win over Richmond when, playing in a forward pocket, he was among the best players on show. He crossed to VFA club Williamstown as captain-coach in 1945, and, playing at centre half forward, steered his charges to a 16.21 (117) to 10.20 (80)  grand final defeat of arch rivals Port Melbourne. In what was his only season with the Seagulls, he played 21 VFA games and scored 14 goals.
