Gaza

Gaza is currently one of Australia’s foremost amateur clubs but it took a long time to achieve that status. The club first joined the South Australian Amateur Football League in 1962 and won an A3 premiership, the first of an eventual three, on debut. After the third such success in 1978 the team spent more than two decades competing in A2 Grade without once contesting a grand final. They finally achieved promotion to the SAAFL’s top grade as premiers in 2000 following which they were consistently among the competition pace setters for more than a decade.

The Tigers first qualified for the Division One grand final in 2003. Opposed by Broadview they won a low scoring clash convincingly by 24 points. Since then there have been three further Division One grand final appearances. Gaza lost to Goodwood Saints in both 2005 and 2007 before scoring a heart-stopping 4 point victory over Sacred Heart Old Collegians. Gaza remained in Division One until succumbing to relegation in 2014. The next five seasons saw the Eagles finishing third (2015), sixth (2016), fifth (2017), seventh (2018) and 10th and last (2019) in Division Two. The 2020 season saw them fronting up in Division Three where they finished sixth.

Before they joined the SAAFL Gaza competed in the North Adelaide Football Association, claiming a total of three senior grade flags.
