AustralianFootball.com Celebrating the history of the great Australian game
Although the Monbulk Football Club was actively participating in local competitions as early as the first decade of the twentieth century precise details of its achievements are unknown. However, it is believed that prior to world war one the club was successful in procuring a number of premierships. In 1921 the club was a foundation member of the Mountaineer Football Association and claimed the flag in what proved to be its only season in the competition. The remainder of the interwar period was highlighted by twin premiership triumphs in the Mountain District Football Association, the first in 1923 and the second twelve years later. After world war two the Hawks struggled for many years but the past three decades or so have seen them enjoying regular premiership success. Five of the seven flags claimed during this time have been in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League’s top division with the others coming in division two. The club has also won reserves flags in both divisions. In 2009 Monbulk’s senior grade side finished third while the reserves got as far as the grand final, which they lost to Upwey Tecoma by 37 points. Subsequent seasons produced varied results, highlighted by a preliminary final appearance in 2011. Their most recent campaign, in 2017, saw them finish in sixth position on the ten team Division One premiership ladder after they won 7 of their 18 home and away fixtures. A year later they managed 2 more wins but still came seventh once more.
