Brighton
Brighton began as Mangalore in 1885, but changed to Brighton Robins in 1995 before joining the new Southern Tasmanian Football League (SthFL) in 1996 as one of the founding members. A finalist in both 1996 and 1997, the club broke through for a dramatic premiership in 1998 when it won a replayed grand final against Cygnet. After a tense, low scoring draw in the initial game, Brighton won the replay convincingly by 13 goals.
The Robins again contested the grand final in 1999, but on this occasion former TFL side Hobart proved too strong in front of a record crowd of 3,096 at the Huon Recreation Ground..
When the league (renamed Southern Football League - SFL) split into two divisions in 2002 Brighton found itself in the elite premier league along with ex TFL heavyweights like North Hobart, Glenorchy and Clarence. Adding to the club’s premiership tally was therefore always going to be difficult but there were hopes, so far unrealised, that the departure of these clubs to the new statewide competition in 2009 would make the task correspondingly easier.
Recent seasons have seen the Robins finishing tenth and last in 2013, sixth of ten in 2014, fifth of ten in 2015, seventh of nine in 2016, eighth of nine in 2017 and ninth and last having lost all 16 roster matches contested in 2018. The club did not field a senior team in 2019-20 but is set to resume in 2021.
