Ongerup
The name Ongerup allegedly derives from a native expression meaning “place of the male kangaroo”. It is not surprising therefore that the Ongerup football team is nicknamed the Kangaroos.
In 1963 Ongerup was one of just two foundation members of the Ongerup Football Association and was thus guaranteed a grand final berth. Unfortunately, opponents The Hassells proved too strong, and it was not until 1972 that the Kangaroos won their first flag. Since then, there have been five more, with the most recent coming in 2007 thanks to a 15.11 (101) to 11.12 (78) grand final defeat of Boxwood Hills. At the end of the 2010 season the club went into recess.
