In the final match for Round 6, we head on down south to the Hickinbotham Oval for the ABC TV match between the Panthers and the Magpies. The last six encounters between these clubs are split down the middle as three wins each, Souths winning their last stoush in Round 14 last year at Alberton by 23 points.
A big scoring first quarter greeted the 1700 people that turned up, only poor kicking on goal prevented the Panthers taking a bigger advantage at quarter-time. They kicked 6.6 to Port's 5.2 to lead by 10 points at the first change. The Magpies then turned it around in the second quarter, kicking 5.3 to South's 2.2 as the game really started getting physical between the teams. At the long break, the visitors held a nine-point lead. When the match re-commenced, it was from here the Panthers hit the ground running. Souths went nuts, restricting the Magpies to 2.4 while booting 7.1 to re-take control of the contest and take a three-goal lead going into the final term. Port wouldn't go away easily, but the Panthers had plenty of answers to everything the 'Pies could muster. South would add a further 6.1 to Port's 5.5 saw the home side win by 20 points, in a game where close to 40 goals were kicked!
Nick Liddle was named best afield for the Panthers, while Brett Ebert was voted best for Port.
