At the Broadspectrum Oval, the Eagles were looking to steal that coveted third spot on the ladder with a victory over the Bloods.
The Eagles started off in fine style, booting out to an 18 point lead by quarter time after kicking 4.2 to West's 1.2. The tempo was interrupted a little in the second quarter as the Eagles seemingly took the foot off the pedal, but West's inaccuracy cost them a chance at taking the lead. At the long break the margin was 17 points in favour of the visitors. But after a probable tongue lashing by Ron Fuller during the break, the Eagles returned to the field with a vengeance, while the Bloods couldn't buy a goal for almost 50 minutes of football. The Eagles tore the Bloods to pieces from here, starting off by booting 7.7 to the Bloods three lousy behinds in the third quarter, then another 5.2 in the last quarter. West's long suffering band of supporters had to wait until that final term to see another goal, their embarrassing second half inaccuracy putting a heap of salt into their wounds. The Eagles won by 82 points, taking over third spot after North's loss at the same time.
The Eagles' Bernie Vince was voted best on ground, while West's James Ezard was their only shining light.
