The following day at the Challenge Recruitment Oval at the Bay, it was Glenelg squaring off against North Adelaide. These two teams had some memorable contests during the 1980's, contesting three Grand Finals during this decade. But before the SANFL moved to their headquarters at West Lakes in 1974, the Tigers and the Roosters put on one last show at Adelaide Oval in the 1973 decider and this is the one match between the two that really stands out. In a match that saw 40 goals kicked, the Tigers won the 1973 flag by seven points under Neil Kerley's guidance. The Tigers won the next two Grand Final encounters in 1985 and 1986 but the Roosters would deny them a hat-trick in 1987 when they broke the Tigers in half by 82 points.
Again there was a picture perfect day and an awesome crowd to boot, with over 5,500 people turning up and among them was Power star Chad Cornes who was taking the AFL-free weekend opportunity to see his SANFL club in action.
The Tigers were switched on to begin with, sinking home 8.3 to the Roosters' lowly 2.1 to establish a 38 point margin at quarter-time. The Roosters turned it around in the second term though, bringing the gap back to 13 points after kicking 7.5 to the Tigers' 3.4 before the long break. The Tigers ran off again when play restarted for the second half, ramming home 7.2 to North's 1.2 to put the margin out to 43 points by the end of the third quarter. Despite the visitors again making an impressive run on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter -- North 8.1 to Glenelg 4.2 -- they still fell short by 26 points.
Glenelg named Brett Backwell as their best on ground, while the Roosters voted James Allan as their best player.
