In the final match for Round 1, Central District raised yet another premiership flag in front of their home crowd at Hamra Homes Oval. In recognition of their 50 years in league ranks they would play Woodville-West Torrens, who as two seperate teams held some history with the Dogs. The latter defeating the newcomers in their first match in 1964, then the former who the Bulldogs' defeated in 1965 for their first ever win in the league.
Both sides were definitely a bit rusty early on, the Dogs taking a three point lead at quarter-time. The Doggies pushed ahead to a 14 point lead at the long break, but inaccuracy would keep the door ajar for the Eagles. The margin was unchanged at three quarter-time, with both sides kicking 4.1 a piece. The visitors made a run at the Dogs in the final term by kicking 3.3, but the home side's 2.3 kept the Eagles from stealing victory.
The Bulldogs took an eight point win to start 2009, naming ruckman Jon Griffin as their best while rookie Jarrad Allmond was voted in as the Eagles' standout.
