We head on down to the Alberton Oval, where the original SA football rivalry was sparked once more as the Magpies took on the Redlegs. Not even the prospect of zero media coverage could bring in a crowd, only a little over 2,600 turning out for the third match in the 2009 Williams-Gallagher Cup series.
Norwood came off best from the get-go, taking a three goal lead at quarter-time after kicking 5.3 to the 'Pies 2.3. That lead was extended to 22 points at half-time, in a quarter where Redleg skipper James Gallagher took the first of two hits which resulted in him leaving the field both times. The other hit took place in the third quarter, again having him leave the field but his charges keeping hold of the lead as they kicked 4.3 to 4.1 to take a 24-point lead at the final change. Gallagher and his men saved their best for last, the captain continuing to lead by example as they landed home 6.3 to the Magpies' 4.3 to take a 36 point victory and a $20,000 cheque.
Gallagher was voted best for the Redlegs, the Magpies named Jeremy Clayton as their best player. An animated Tim Ginever -- who is leaving at season's end -- lashed out at several undisciplined acts committed by his team, one of which resulted in a report to the tribunal.
