Match Report

For the first match of the season we head to City Mazda Stadium for the first ever match under the ground's brand spanking new lights... Friday night footy bringing over 6,100 people to watch the Bloods take on the Roosters. The last encounter between these two was a heartbreaker for the Bloods, a low-scoring match saw them go down by less than a goal. But this one wasn't going to get away from the home team on such a historic occasion.

West quickly went into attack from the start, taking a four goal lead at quarter-time after kicking 5.2 to North's lowly 1.2. The goals were less plentiful in the second term, but the Bloods' impact on the Rooster bodies was unrelenting as they made their opponents hurt at every opportunity. At the half-time break the lead was stretched out to 38 points after a 2.5 to 1.3 second term. Poor kicking on goal would turn out to be the only problem for the home side on this night, they continued to spray shots wide when play resumed but the Roosters didn't far much better. In the third term, the Bloods added 4.7 to North's poor 1.2. With little resistance from the Roosters, West were just happy to keep making a physical impact. A further 3.5 to 2.0 in the final term saw West home by 12 goals, leaving Bloods fans with healthy optimism for 2010.

James Ezard was named best for West, while Phil Davis was North's only shining light.
