In the final match for Round 20, its up to the northern suburbs to the Hamra Homes Oval in Elizabeth for the match between the Bulldogs and the Magpies. The reigning premiers were sitting on nine straight victories against the Magpies, the last contest ending in a 58-point belting at Alberton in Round 7. But this time, with several regular senior players on the outer -- both Gowans brothers, Callinan, Switala and Schell -- some younger blood needed to step up... and step up they did.
The Dogs opened proceedings with a 5.3 to 1.1 first quarter to take a 26-point lead at the first change. They followed that up by kicking a 6.1 to 2.1 second quarter to blow that gap out to 50 points by half-time, further adding to Port coach Tony Bamford's headaches. The third quarter was far from spectacular, one could be forgiven for going for a Coke and a smile as both sides managed just one goal each, missed shots making the difference on the board as the Dogs extended their advantage to 51 points. Things got back on track in the final quarter, Centrals kicking 4.3 to Port's 3.1 to see the home side run off to a 59-point win, Bamford leaving his assistant to face the media.
Trent Goodrem stood tall for the Dogs and was named best while Port named Matthew Lokan as their best afield.
