The Crows and the Magpies took their match to the country as over 5000 locals, travelling fans and Channel Seven trucks filed into Clare Oval. There's no history between these two clubs at this level, but everyone knows the story behind their rivalry. This was the first ever encounter between these teams as seconds outfits and the first time the Crows have faced Port in black & white. The Crows have had about as much luck as their senior-level counterparts, while the Magpies have been swatting teams aside with relative ease.
Speaking of which, the Magpies opened the afternoon's proceedings with a 7.1 to 2.2 opening term to take a 29-point lead at quarter-time. Some inaccuracy started to creep into the Magpies camp, the Crows chipping a couple of points off that deficit by the long break after kicking 3.1 to 2.5. At half-time, the Magpies held a 27-point lead. When play resumed, the Port machine clicked back into gear. The Magpies would dominate the match from here onwards, although the Crows were more competitive and got within 15 points at one stage, the gap would stretch back out to 34 points after Port added a total 5.3 to 4.2 in the third term. The final term would see the 'Pies ram through a further 6.3 to Adelaide's 4.4, Port taking a resounding 45-point win.
This match was brought into the town of Clare not just as the Crows only 'home' game, but also in part for the Redden family whose son Max was lost in tragic circumstances last year. Family patriarch Tom is a principal of Clare Toyota as well as an associate of the North Clare FC, all match takings will go to the North East Football League.
