Alan Linden was a hefty 191cm 96kg ruckman and forward who commenced his senior football career in 1939 with Sandringham in the VFA. In 1941 he joined South Melbourne where, after initially struggling to gain a regular senior place, he developed into a handy player. In 1945 he played in South’s grand final team against Carlton after having been omitted from the side for the second semi final. Lining up in a forward pocket he produced a serviceable performance and kicked a couple of goals, but the Blues proved too strong. He retired as a player in 1947 after 80 VFL games and 56 goals with the red and whites.
