Recruited from Carnegie, Alan McCrory joined Richmond in 1938 as a half-forward flanker. He kicked a couple of behinds and had a hand in a goal in his debut match, a big win over North Melbourne in round one of that year, with Percy Taylor of the Argus giving him a tick of approval on the following Monday: "McCrory shaped well, particularly in the last quarter". However, after playing a further three matches, McCrory was omitted from the Tigers side that suffered a shock round four loss to St Kilda, and played just one more match for the yellow and black, a loss to Fitzroy in the final round.

McCrory spent another season with the Tigers without playing a senior game before lining up at full forward with Oakleigh in the VFA. He had some success with the Purple and Golds, kicking 53 goals before having a second tilt at making in the VFL, this time with South Melbourne. He managed three games with the Swans in 1941 and another in 1943, but service in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II limited his opportunities and he finished his league career with a total of nine games and four goals to his credit.
