Now lauded as the first aboriginal player at both Carlton and North Melbourne, Alf Egan was tall, wiry and adaptable. A ruckman-forward he began with Carlton in round three of the 1931 season against Essendon at Princes Park and played the last of his 36 games for the Blues in the 1933 first semi final loss to Geelong at the MCG. He booted 20 goals.
Egan’s most memorable performance in a Carlton jumper was the 1932 grand final clash with Richmond. The Blues lost, but Egan performed heroically, and was mentioned high in despatches.
Shortly after the aforementioned 1933 first semi final he crossed to North Melbourne where he rounded off his playing career with 15 VFL games and seven goals for the shinboners.
