From Carlton Rovers, Barry Ion was a steady defender for Footscray in 40 games from 1961 to 1965. He played in a grand final in his debut season, but despite being one of the Bulldogs’ best players could not prevent their losing to Hawthorn. After leaving the Western Oval Ion played 11 games and scored five goals for Yarraville in the VFA first division in 1966. He rounded off his time in the SANFL with Woodville, where he played 20 games in two seasons. He went on to carve out a noteworthy career as a radio presenter.
