William 'Billy' Gent was an extremely talented rover whose VFL career was sullied by his bad behaviour on the field. After commencing his senior career with Essendon Town (later known as Essendon Association) he joined South Melbourne in 1903, and the following year incurred a suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct that took in the remainder of the 1904 season and the whole of 1905. He returned in 1906, but was in trouble again late in the 1907 season when the Tribunal handed him a lifetime ban. This was later reduced, however, and he resumed briefly in 1908 to take his final tally of VFL games to 62.
