A cheeky, determined and aggressive customer who was a proven master of 'staging' for free kicks, Bob Troughton began his senior league career with West Torrens in 1926 and topped that club's goal kicking list in 1928 (37 goals) and 1929 (51), and for whom he played a total of 51 senior league games and kicked 143 goals. He crossed to Geelong in 1930 and was an important player for the Cats over the next six seasons, including the winning 1931 Grand Final against Richmond. Most of his football was played either on the wing or as a half forward flanker with a license to roam.
Extremely proficient at what, in later years, would come to be described as 'hard ball gets' he also used the ball, however it had been obtained, with consummate efficiency. In his six seasons with Geelong he played 92 games and booted 100 goals.
