Brian Kann worked his way up through the ranks at Hawthorn before making his senior league debut in 1954. A steady and solid defender, he went on to play 57 VFL games for the Hawks without scoring a goal. Towards the end of his time in the VFL he played mainly seconds football, and indeed in 1958 and 1959 he skippered the seconds to successive premierships.

In 1960 Kann crossed to Moorabbin in the VFA whom he helped to qualify for that season’s finals, although they bowed out at the first hurdle against Yarraville.
