After commencing his senior football playing career with Oakleigh, which at the time was competing in the Melbourne Districts Football Association, Clarrie Lethlean was recruited by Melbourne in 1921. He went on to play nine games with the Fuchsias that year without really establishing himself, and in 1922 he sought pastures new in the shape of VFA side Hawthorn, where he would remain until 1927. The last three of those years saw the club competing in the VFL, with Lethlean playing 43 VFL games and scoring 18 goals. Used as a forward early on, his career blossomed after he was switched to defence, where his principal assets of strength, tenacity and nous served him well. In his last season with the Mayblooms he was appointed captain.
