Cyril Lilburne, sometimes referred to as ‘Dooley’, was an accomplished all round sportsman who excelled at cricket, rowing and tennis in addition to football. He was a versatile footballer, equally at home as a centreman, half forward, half back and follower. He played 135 VFA games and scored 141 goals for Brighton from 1923 to 1925 and between 1930 and 1935. He also represented the VFA twice. From 1926 to 1929 he played for Richmond in the VFL, where his 74 appearances included the losing grand finals of 1927-8-9, all against Collingwood. He booted 20 goals and played two games for Victoria. Following his retirement as a player he took up lawn bowls, another sport at which he proved highly proficient.
