Dale Fleming joined Hawthorn from Southern Football League club Canterbury before being traded to Fitzroy without having played a senior game. He spent the 1992 and 1993 seasons with the Lions, playing 13 games and kicking 15 goals. Most of his early football was played as a forward but shortly after joining Norwood he made the transition to defence, in the process becoming arguably the finest full back in the state.
Ever willing to back his judgement, he provided the Redlegs with great rebound as well as boasting excellent defensive skills, with strong tackling his particular forte. His 137 SANFL games played between 1994 and 2001 included the triumphant 1997 grand final when Norwood annihilated arch rivals Port Adelaide. He also represented the SANFL in the interstate arena on several occasions.
