Ultra solid and dependable, Denis O’Callaghan was a fixture at the Collingwood Football Club as a defender in 129 VFL games from 1968 to 1973 and in 1975. He missed the entire 1974 season because of a knee injury. Sound overhead and neat at ground level he may not have been thre most flamboyant of players but his effectiveness was there for all to say. He was on a half back flank in the losing grand final of 1970 against Carlton and played finals football e very season except his first. After leaving the Magpies he spent the 1976 season as coach of VFA side Coburg, steering the side to fifth place in first division. He later joined another VFA first division team in Brunswick.
