Fred O’Shea commenced with Brunswick in 1907 and went on to play in the club’s 1909 grand final defeat of Prahran. In 1910, having played 36 games and scored 17 goals for the Pottery Workers, he joined Essendon, and was soon being hailed as one of the finest wingmen in the VFL. It was said of him that “he was adept at running and dodging and rarely lost his kick”. He was a star performer for the Same Old in their 1911 grand final defeat of Collingwood. A year later he was unfortunate to miss out through injury as Essendon went back to back at the expense of South Melbourne. He returned to Brunswick in 1913 having played 51 games and scored five goals for Essendon.
