After working his way through the ranks at Melbourne Geoff Harrold made his senior debut in 1972, the first of just two appearances for the year. An employment transfer to Canberra in 1973 brought an abrupt end to his VFL career, but not to his involvement in football.

In 1973-4 Harrold played with Ainslie before joining West Canberra in 1975. He enjoyed a noteworthy eight season stint with the underachieving Magpies, winning three club best and fairest awards and representing the ACT on numerous occasions. His last port of call was Queanbeyan where he played and acted as assistant coach from 1983 to 1988.

A key forward during the early part of his career he produced his best and most consistent football after being shifted to centre half back. It is not known precisely how many ACTAFL games he played, but it is acknowledged to have been in excess of 200.

Geoff Harrold was inducted into the AFL Canberra Hall of Fame in 2007.
