George McLeod was a key member of Essendon’s 1911 and 1912 VFL premiership-winning sides. More of a battler than a virtuoso, he was nevertheless keenly combative and influential, and could perhaps fairly be described as the sort of grafter every premiership team needs. Between 1910 and 1913 he played 56 games and kicked five goals for the Same Old.

Prior to joining Essendon McLeod played 12 games and booted one goal for St Kilda in 1897 and from 1910 to 1903. Between 1904 and 1909 he lined up for the Railway club in Tasmania’s Lyell District Football Association. He also represented his adopted state at the inaugural Australasian football carnival in 1908. In 1914 and 1915 he finished his senior playing career with Brunswick in the VFA.
