After progressing from the club’s reserves Graeme Gahan made his senior VFL debut with Richmond in 1959. Usually deployed on a half back flank during the VFL portion of his playing career, he was a straight ahead type who combined aggression with determination in ample measure. He played once for Victoria and finished third in the Tigers’ 1962 best and fairest count, the same year which saw him play in the club’s only ever night premiership victory. His time at Richmond saw him play 89 VFL games and kick seven goals.

In 1967 Gahan took on the role of captain-coach of NTFA side Scottsdale. In two seasons with the club he played 38 games and booted 33 goals as well as playing twice for Tasmania. In 1968 he steered the team to a premiership.

In 1969 and 1970 Graeme Gahan captain-coached Glenorchy. Now playing chiefly as a forward he topped the club’s goal kicking list with 40 goals in the first of those seasons. This phase of his career saw him play 29 TFL games and register 62 goals.

Gahan later returned to Victoria and had spells as coach of Warragul, Yallourn, Drouin and Yarragon.
