Hard working and dependable, defender Greg Madigan had a dream start to his VFL career by playing in Hawthorn’s 1989 premiership-winning team in only his sixth game. Thereafter, however, he failed fully to build on this promise, and he would be in and out of the seniors over the remaining five seasons of his time with the Hawks, ultimately playing just 40 games and kicking four goals.

In 1994 he was drafted by Fremantle as part of the club’s inaugural squad of players. The Dockers took their bows in the AFL in 1995 and, for the only time in his career Madigan was a regular, first choice senior player, making 18 appearances for the year. After that, however, the wheels fell off somewhat, and he only played eight games over the ensuing couple of seasons. When not playing for Fremantle he fronted up for Swan Districts (21 games, 19 goals, 1995-7) and East Fremantle (19 games, two goals in 1998) in the local competition. Echoing the start to his career the ending also saw him participate in a premiership triumph when he lined up in his customary centre half back position for East Fremantle’s 20.10 (130) to 13.9 (87) grand final defeat of West Perth.
