Harold Matthews was a highly accomplished defender who started out with Brighton in the VFA before making his name at St Kilda. Between 1927 and 1932 he played 136 VFL games for the Saints, as well as representing the VFL on seven occasions. Always scrupulously fair, he was also sure overhead, boasted excellent anticipation, and was a thumping kick. He shared St Kilda’s 1926 best and fairest award with Horrie Mason.
