Ian Fairley hit the headlines when, aged just 15, he booted eight goals on debut for VFA side Williamstown. He spent three seasons with the Seagulls and then from 1983 to 1996 played 217 senior games and kicked 149 goals for North Melbourne . An assured, safe, confident type of footballer, he was well suited to a variety of positions but played most of his games, particularly in later seasons, at centre half back. In his last match, North Melbourne's 1996 Grand Final win, he capped off a fine career by roaming forward and scoring a late goal, to the great delight of all of his teammates.
