Originally from North Reservoir, Ian McCrae was a regular senior player at Fitzroy during a persistently dismal time for the club. Between 1962 and 1970 he played 97 VFL games and booted 50 goals for a team which never once came within spitting distance of finals qualification. Indeed, the Roys never finished higher than tenth.
Despite this, McCrae was a consistently productive wingman with pace to burn, a legacy of his sideline as a professional sprinter.
