Jack Finck was a dashing, dependable key position defender who might feasibly have achieved more had he not opted to retire, somewhat prematurely, at the age of just 24. As it was, he played 53 VFL games and scored eight goals for the Magpies between 1951 and 1954, with the undoubted highlight coming in 1953 when he lined up at full back for the team’s 11.11 to 8.17 grand final defeat of Geelong. His reason for retiring was that he found the journeys from his home in Hamilton to Melbourne and back excessively irksome and tiring.
