In 1913, his first League season, Jack Kappler was the first recorded recipient of the Sturt Football Club best and fairest award. He would go on to enjoy a noteworthy career with the Double Blues, highlighted by membership of their first two SAFL grand final-winning teams in 1915 and 1919. In both games he was among his team’s best players, while in 1915 the challenge final defeat of Port Adelaide was his only game for the year.

Versatile and dependable, Kappler was a South Australian interstate representative. The Sturt phase of his career spanned the years 1913 to 1915 and 1919-20 and saw him play 47 games. The 1921 season brought a change of scenery as he joined SAFL debutants Glenelg where he played 23 games over two years.
