Jack Lowry was an abundantly skilled footballer who had the VFL portion of his playing career persistently soured by injury. Prior to commencing in the VFL he played 40 VFA games and scored 17 goals for Prahran from 1936 until early in the 1938 season. When the Two Blues accounted for Brunswick in the 1937 grand final he lined up in the centre and was one of the victors’ best players. He continued to play mostly as a centreman after moving to St Kilda in the VFL, but because of injury he was seldom able to string together more than a handful of games.

When Lowry departed for Sandringham in 1946 he had only managed 53 appearances and seven goals for the Saints in the better part of nine seasons. He enjoyed a memorable end to his playing career, however, helping the Zebras to a seven point defeat of Camberwell in the 1946 VFA grand final. After playing just a couple more games in 1947 he retired, the Sandringham phase of his career having seen him make 15 appearances and boot 43 goals. Whilst with the Zebras he played mostly at centre half forward, hence the impressive goal tally. During this time with Prahran he had twice represented the VFA in losses against the VFL.
